Meet the Horror Author Who Also Works as a College Professor: The Fascinating Life of Stephen Paul Sayers

Horror Book

Welcome back to another episode of Masked Monologues! Today, we have the pleasure of speaking with Stephen Paul Sayers, a talented author known for his horror and supernatural thrillers. Stephen shares his unique journey of balancing a career as a research professor and his passion for writing spine-chilling novels. Let's dive into his world and discover what makes this horror author tick.

The Beginning: From Movies to Manuscripts

Stephen's love for horror began in the 70s and 80s, watching horror movies and reading Stephen King's works.

"I probably got started with that back when I was watching crazy horror movies back in the 80s and 70s and reading Stephen King and really got hooked on that," he recalls.

This fascination with the genre eventually led him to explore his creative side through writing.

The Dual Life: Scientist by Day, Horror Author by Night

By day, Stephen is a college professor, conducting research to improve the health of older adults. By night, he transforms into a horror author, crafting stories that send shivers down your spine.

"I actually do research. So I'm in the lab during the day and trying to solve some issues with exercise and older adults and trying to keep them healthy. And then I write some scary stuff at night," Stephen explains.

The Catalyst: A Challenge from His Daughter

Interestingly, Stephen's journey into writing was sparked by his daughter, who challenged him to write a book.

"I wasn't really a writer until my daughter started writing and I started reading her work and she actually at one point challenged me to write a book," he says.

What began as a personal challenge turned into a serious pursuit, leading to the publication of his first novel.

Finding Inspiration and Crafting Stories

Stephen's writing process is unique and somewhat unconventional. He starts with an idea but allows the story and characters to evolve organically.

"I will start with an idea that can come to me, I don't know how...I will go in a direction, I'll start something, I'll have a vague idea where, how it could end. But then I start writing, these characters start to develop," he shares.

Overcoming Challenges: Writer’s Block and Time Management

Balancing a demanding career with a passion for writing is no easy feat. Stephen admits to facing writer's block, particularly during the pandemic.

"I didn't write for, almost, almost a year. It was very strange," he reveals.

However, he believes in the value of writing consistently, even if it means deviating from the main plot temporarily.

Building Real Characters

Character development is crucial in Stephen's novels. He emphasizes the importance of creating three-dimensional characters that readers can connect with.

"Make the reader feel the loss of that character because there's something really special about them," he advises.

Creating a Community and Marketing

Stephen understands the importance of engaging with readers and building a community. He participates in live events, interacts with fans, and values feedback from beta readers.

"It's a long process. It has to be something you love, and you have to love to engage with people about writing," he notes.

The Importance of a Good Book Cover

Stephen believes that a professional and eye-catching book cover is essential for attracting readers.

"I think one of the most important things for any author...spend the money and get a good cover. It really does help sell your book," he emphasizes.

Final Thoughts

Stephen Paul Sayers' journey as a horror author is a testament to following one's passion, even when it means juggling multiple roles. His dedication to both his scientific career and his love for writing has resulted in captivating horror novels that continue to thrill readers.
