Welcome back to another episode of Masked Monologues. Today, we have the pleasure of speaking with Michael Key. Michael is a dynamic individual from the Bronx, New York, whose life and career span various creative and inspirational fields. Let’s dive into his remarkable journey.
Meet Michael Key
Hello everybody, my name is Michael Key, and I’m 51 years old. I live in the Bronx, New York. I’m a published author, having written 15 books in my lifetime, with two currently available on Amazon and other platforms. I consider myself a calm, cool, and collected person. I’m very adventurous and love to travel. Besides writing, I’m also a fashion designer and a positive rap artist. I’ve written over 3000 songs and released an album in 2012. I’m currently working on a new album and exploring motivational speaking. I have a certificate in motivational speaking from a program I attended during my time in court service. I also have two children, Maria and Timothy, who are in their late teens.
The Beginning of a Creative Journey
My creative journey began at around 10 years old when I started writing poetry. Friends and peers suggested that I turn my poems into songs, sparking the idea in my mind. By the time I was 14 or 15, I started writing songs seriously. Over the next decade, I performed at rap shows in clubs and hotels and even signed with a record label. Unfortunately, the label went out of business, but I’m making a comeback with a new album soon.
My writing career started at 18 when I wrote my first book, The World I Still Love, a 102-page poetry collection about life, love, and beautiful experiences. My latest book, Conversations: The Motivation to Change the Situation, was released in December 2023. It’s a 212-page biblical fiction novel about a young woman’s quest for love, highlighting the trials and tribulations of love and how to overcome them.
Branching Out
Fashion design is another passion that I recently pursued. About two years ago, I started my own brand, Harmony of Positive Reality, which aligns with my positive outlook on life. I plan to sell books, music, logos, and slogans on various merchandise like t-shirts, sneakers, and mugs through a Shopify store.
Challenges and Perseverance
The journey hasn’t been easy. In the music industry, I faced many obstacles. There was favoritism in contests, and as a positive artist, it was tough to get recognized. However, I do music for the love of it, not for the money. I believe that even if my music touches just one person, I’ve done my job.
In the book industry, I learned the hard way that self-publishing is often more cost-effective than traditional publishing. Mistakes have taught me valuable lessons, and I’ve found more efficient ways to achieve my goals.
Motivational Speaking
My interest in motivational speaking began during a difficult time in my life. I spent three years in prison, where I participated in a substance abuse program. There, I discovered my talent for motivational speaking. My stories resonated with others, and I realized this was my purpose.
After my release, I connected with Circles of Support, an organization that helps people transition back into society. Through their program, I honed my speaking skills and found my calling in helping others through motivational speaking.
Looking Ahead
I’m working on bringing my fashion brand to life on Shopify. The process is in its early stages, but I’m excited about the potential. My goal is to use my brand to promote positivity and inspire others. I’m also affiliated with a group called the Speakers Bureau in Manhattan, New York, and I hope to further my motivational speaking career through this connection.
Final Thoughts
I believe that staying true to yourself and your passions is the key to success. Whether it’s music, writing, or fashion, it’s essential to do what you love and not just what’s popular. Creativity and passion should always come first.
