How to Transform Emotions into Art: Exploring Creativity through Music and Poetry

Creative Process

In this episode of Masked Monologues: The Anonymous Podcast for Creatives, I had the pleasure of speaking with the incredibly talented Jenny Leigh Hodgins. Jenny, the host of the Your Creative Chord podcast, has a unique ability to help people tap into their creativity and potential through her work as a musician, poet, and author. Her latest poetry collection, Kaleidoscope of the Heart, is a testament to her journey and dedication to the arts.

The Journey Begins

Jenny's journey into the world of music and poetry started long ago. She shares, "I have composed for indie films, created piano solo music, and even produced a musical theater CD during my five years in Japan." Her diverse experiences in music composition and teaching have shaped her into the multifaceted artist she is today. Jenny's latest venture, Kaleidoscope of the Heart, is a collection of poetry and lyrics that encapsulates her personal experiences and emotions.

From Piano to Poetry

Interestingly, Jenny's foray into poetry was intertwined with her musical pursuits.

"Most of the time, words come first for me," she explains.

Her songwriting process often begins with lyrics, which she then molds into structured verses, choruses, and bridges. However, she also enjoys the freedom that poetry provides, allowing her to explore her emotions and experiences without the constraints of musical structure.

Influences and Inspirations

Jenny's classical training in piano and vocal performance has greatly influenced her work.

"I have a very strong classical and musical theater influence," she notes.

This background has equipped her with a deep appreciation for strong melodies and powerful lyrics. Over the years, she has learned to channel her sensitivity and emotional depth into her writing, creating relatable and moving pieces.

The Power of Vulnerability

One of the most compelling aspects of Jenny's work is her willingness to be vulnerable. She emphasizes the importance of authenticity in creative expression.

"Be who you are. Be vulnerable. Say it like it is," she advises.

This approach not only enhances the emotional impact of her work but also allows her to connect with her audience on a deeper level.

Creative Tips and Techniques

Jenny offers several valuable tips for aspiring creatives. She suggests letting go of judgment and embracing curiosity.

"Let your curiosity lead you where it wants to go," she says.

She also highlights the importance of being open to failure and experimenting with different styles. One of her favorite exercises is to write something intentionally "stupid" to release creative blockages and spark new ideas.

Kaleidoscope of the Heart

Jenny's poetry collection, Kaleidoscope of the Heart, is a culmination of years of personal experiences and reflections. The book covers a wide range of themes, from love and loss to self-doubt and personal victory. Jenny's Buddhist practice also plays a significant role in her work, infusing her poetry with a sense of introspection and spiritual growth.

The inspiration for this book came from her journey as a caregiver for her senior mother and the encouragement of a dear friend. "I decided I just wanted to do that for her," she recalls. What started as a small gift for a friend blossomed into a comprehensive collection of her most cherished poems and lyrics.
